(W. Barnstable, MA – July 1, 2007) --
Four young fencers from the Cape Cod Fencing Club are headed to Miami this week to compete in the United States Fencing Association’s Summer Nationals. Anthony Worthington 15, and Abigael Brady, 15, Victoria Brady, 13, of Falmouth and Maureen Woodward, 14, of Middleboro have battled their way through the qualification process to make it to the Nationals, gathering gold medals as they went. Tony will fence foil in the 16 and under category and also in the 19 and under category as well as the Division II men’s foil. Abby will fence foil in the women’s 16 and under age category. Maureen will also fence in that group as well as the Youth 14 event. She will also fence epee in the youth 14 matches. The three girls will fence in the women’s Under 19 Team Foil Event.
The New England Division of the USFA is sending over 400 fencers of all age groups from 24 Massachusetts and Rhode Island area clubs to the week-long event. There they will compete against more than 4000 other contestants representing clubs from almost every State in the Union .
The four contestants have been coached by Edward Ballinger, a former member of the US Olympic fencing team and United States Foil Champion, Mikhail Kulker, a former Soviet Youth Epee Champion and current New England Veterans Epee Champion.
